Gray Geometric Long Necklace, Sphere and Hoop

A long geometric necklace in metallic plastic, polyamide mixed with aluminium powder, a material that is resistant and light. The design draws on three shapes from Lucas Cranach the Elder's painting Melancholy: a sphere, a circle and a stick. It is made as one piece, with nothing to assemble, and to put it on you pass the sphere through the hoop. At roughly 110 cm it can also be worn as a belt. Made for anyone who likes art history and geometry.

Three shapes from a Cranach painting

The design comes from Melancholy by Lucas Cranach the Elder, part of the National Gallery of Denmark collection. In the painting, three cupids try to pass a sphere through a hoop with sticks and never quite manage it. The necklace takes those three shapes, a sphere, a circle and a stick, and puts them together as one object.

Putting it on finishes the game the cupids never win: you pass the sphere through the hoop yourself. The whole necklace is made as a single object, so there are no separate parts to assemble. It won the SMK / Shapeways contest and was on display in the National Gallery of Denmark foyer from October to December 2017.

Metallic plastic, light to wear

The material is polyamide mixed with aluminium powder, a metallic plastic that is resistant and light. The full length is about 110 cm, or 43 inches, which leaves room to wear it in different ways, including as a belt rather than only around the neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is it?

About 110 cm, or 43 inches, in total. That length is long enough for it to be used as a belt as well as a necklace, so you can wear it in different ways depending on what you have it over.

What is it made of?

Polyamide mixed with aluminium powder, sometimes called metallic plastic. It is a resistant and light material, which is what lets a necklace this long stay comfortable to wear. The design is original and exclusive to the studio.

Does it need assembly?

No. The design was worked out so the complete necklace is a single object and does not require any further assembling. The only thing you do is pass the sphere through the hoop to put it on, which is part of how the design works.
